08-08-08 - இரவு 08:08 முதல் ஒலிம்பிக் போட்டி (ஆகஸ்டு 8 - 24) ஆரம்பமாகும் நேரம். சீனாவுக்கு 8 ராசியான எண் என்பதால் எல்லாம் "8" மயம்!
இந்தியாவுக்குகூட 'நம்பர் 8' ராசியானது! இதுவரைக்கும் நம்ம வாங்கின மொத்த தங்கம்: 8 (1900 - 2004). நமக்கு பெருமை சேர்த்த அந்த ஒரு அணி: ஹாக்கி! 1928 லிருந்து 1956 வரை தொடர்ந்து 6 முறை தங்கம் வென்றது. கடைசி தங்க பதக்கம் வாங்கிய ஆண்டு 1980! இந்த வருடம் தகுதி சுற்றிலேயே அதுவும் "காலி!"
2008க்கான ஒலிம்பிக் போட்டியை சீனா நடத்த கனடா, பிரான்ஸ், துருக்கி & ஜப்பான் நாடுகளுடன் போட்டி போட்டு வென்றடுத்திருக்கிறது.
இந்தியாவிலிருந்து 99 பேர் கொண்ட அணி (சீனா - 639; அமெரிக்கா - 596 பேர்) 2008 பீஜிங் ஒலிம்பிக்கு போயிருக்கு. இந்த 99 பேருல 57 வீரர்கள் மற்றும் 44 அரசு அதிகாரிகள் (சானியா மிர்ஷா அம்மாவும் உண்டு!) 57 வீரர்களுக்கு 44 அரசு அதிகாரிகள்...!! எல்லாம் நம்ம வரிப்பணத்திலதான் இந்த பயணம்....!
முதன் முதல 1900 ஒலிம்பிக்கில் தடகளப்போட்டில 2 வெள்ளி பதக்கம் வாங்கியிருக்கோம். 2004ல வாங்கின வெள்ளியவும் சேர்த்து ஒலிம்பிக்கில் நம்ம வாங்கிய மொத்த பதக்கம் 17! (அட அதுவும் 8!!)
பதக்கம் வாங்கி தலைப்பு செய்தில வர்றோமோ இல்லையோ, கிளம்புறதுக்கு முன்னாடியே இப்படிபட்ட செய்தில நம்ம பேரு வந்திருது. இந்த இலட்சணத்தில்தான் டெல்லியில் 2020 ஒலிம்பிக் நடக்கிறத்துக்கான முயற்சி பண்ண போறோமாம்....!

* Khade, Poseria fizzle in the pool
Indian challenge in swimming came to an end as neither Virdhawal Khade nor Ankur Poseria could repeat or better their personal best at the Beijing Olympics on Thursday. In the 100m butterfly event, Poseria clocked 54.74 to finish overall 57th, more than one second behind his personal best of 53.68. Khade, on the other hand, timed 22.73 in the heats to finish overall 40th, failing to better his personal best of 22.69s which he recorded at last month's FINA World Youth Championship in Mexico.

Anjali Bhagwat and Avneet Kaur Sidhu failed to qualify for the 50m Rifle Three Positions event at the Beijing Olympics on Thursday morning.

* Paes-Bhupathi enter Olympic quarter-finals
Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi cruised into the quarter-finals of the Beijing Olympics with a straight sets win over Brazilian duo of Marcelo Melo and Andre Sa.
The seventh seeded Indian pair beat Melo-Sa 6-4, 6-2 in the pre-quarters on Wednesday.
They will meet fourth seeds Roger Federer/Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland.
* Mangal Singh Champia out
India's archery challenge in the Beijing Olympics came to an end with Mangal Singh Champia failing to replicate his ranking round form and crashing out in pre-quarterfinals in the men's individual section in Beijing on Wednesday.
* Saina Nehwal bows out of badminton singles
Indian badminton ace Saina Nehwal bowed out of the women's singles in the badminton competition at the Olympics, losing to Indonesia’s Kristin Maria Yulianti in the quarter-finals.
The 18-year-old, playing in her first Olympics, was beaten 28-26, 14-21, 15-21 by the world No 16.
* Khade, Sejwal create new national records
Indian swimming duo of Virdhawal Khade and Sandeep Sejwal gave their best to create twin national records even if that was not enough to see them through in the semifinals of the 100m Freestyle and 200m Breaststroke events respectively at the Beijing Olympics on Tuesday.
Kolhapur-born Khade, dubbed the fastest swimmer in his age group, clocked 50.07 to better his previous mark of 50.49 in men's 100m Freestyle to finish overall 42nd.
Sejwal did even better knocking down three seconds off his own previous mark of 2:18.23 and clocked 2:15.24.

Sania Mirza's Olympics debut lasted all of 46 minutes. The Indian ace retired with an injury in her first round match against Czech Iveta Benesova, at the Beijing Games on Monday. Sania, who had lost all her three previous matches against Benesova, was trailing 1-6, 1-2 when she quit.

A L Lakra paid the price of being too cautious as he crashed out of the Beijing Olympics' boxing competition after losing 5-9 to Athens Games bronze medallist Bahodirjon Sultanov in the opening round of the featherweight category in Beijing on Monday.
Lakra, the only Indian boxer in action on Monday, evaded too much and attacked too little against an aggressive Sultanov in the low-scoring bout

பெய்ஜிங்கில் நடைபெற்றுவரும் ஒலிம்பிக் போட்டியில் இந்தியாவின் அசந்தா சரத் கமல், ஆடவர் டேபிள் டென்னிஸ் போட்டியின் முதல் சுற்று ஆட்டத்தில் வெற்றி பெற்று 2-வது சுற்றுக்கு முன்னேறியுள்ளார்.ஆடவர் ஒற்றையர் டேபிள் டென்னிஸ் போட்டியின் முதல் சுற்றில் இந்தியாவின் அசந்தா சரத் கமல் வெற்றி பெற்றார்.ஸ்பெயின் வீரர் ஆல்பிரடோ கார்னராஸை அவர் 4-2 என்ற செட் கணக்கில் வீழ்த்தி 2-வது சுற்றுக்கு முன்னேறினார்.
பெண்கள் நீளம் தாண்டுதல் போட்டி:
ஒலிம்பிக் போட்டி தொடங்கி இன்று 11 நாட்களாகிறது. இந்த 11 நாட்களிலும் இந்தியா ஒரே ஒரு தங்கப் பதக்கம் மட்டுமே பெற்றுள்ளது. இன்று நடைபெற்ற நீளம் தாண்டுதல் போட்டியில் இந்திய வீராங்கனை அஞ்சுபாபிஜார்ஜ் பைனலுக்குள் நுழையும் தகுதியை இழந்தார்.
ஆண்கள் மல்யுத்த போட்டி : 60 கிலோ எடை பிரிவு
மல்யுத்த வீரர் யோகேஸ்வர் தத் 60 கிலோ எடை பிரிவில், கசகஸ்தான் வீரர் ஓராஸ்கலியேவை தோற்கடித்து காலிறுதிக்குள் அடி எடுத்து வைத்தார். ஆனால் காலிறுதியில் யோகேஷ் தோல்வியை தழுவினார்.
